Virtually Attending Living Future 20: Participants Produce Hope Within Crises

By Charley Stevenson

With the theme of “Sustaining Hope within Crisis,” and expanding on the original climate change focus to encompass the COVID-19 crisis as well, the virtual Living Future 2020 conference fulfilled its mission admirably. Swiftly—and commendably—organized online, LF20 not only sustained hope, it generated hope and a promise of better times ahead.

Reducing Embodied Carbon in New Construction or Renovation

If your organization wants to reduce embodied carbon in your building projects, what can you do? The best way to answer the question of whether new construction or renovation is preferable from a climate perspective is do a life cycle carbon scenario analysis of both possibilities. Ultimately, you may even decide on renovation or new construction based on other factors, but commit to prioritizing low-carbon construction in the chosen scenario. Depending on the project, careful decisions in either a renovation or new construction may be more important for climate impact than whether you undertake one or the other.

An Up Close Look at the 14th Annual North American Passive House Conference

The PHIUS 2019 conference was another affirmation that the building industry is focused on solving problems contributing to climate change. Economist Jeremy Rifkin’s opening keynote was filled with data from recent studies—industry studies from the banking, insurance and energy sectors—that show that the business community is moving toward more carbon friendly energy sources like solar and wind, and that the Green New Deal has tremendous potential to improve quality of life and solve environmental issues.

Why Are We So Sick – and What Can We Do?

As many of us age, some start to wonder why we don’t feel so good anymore. Millions experience chronically occurring diseases and conditions that have developed in us over our lifetimes. Health care costs alone, according to PLANSPONSOR magazine, are estimated at $285,000 for a retired couple! How can this be? What is causing this spike in health care expenses for retirees? How do we get so sick and what can we do about it?

IES talks Red2Green evolution at Lever’s Innovation Summit 2019

Recently, IES Principle Charley Stevenson addressed Lever’s Innovation Summit 2019 in Williamstown, MA, which also featured a keynote presentation by Steve Case, former CEO and chairman of America Online and now chairman and CEO of Revolution. In a video provided by WiliNet TV, Charley discusses the evolution of our materials tracking platform, Red2Green. What started out as a single project (and a resulting stack of spreadsheets) has lead to nearly 60 projects neatly organized in our proprietary software, now used nationwide. Check out the video below to learn more about how a unique challenge evolved into a great opportunity.

Getting Smarter and Better About Materials & Health

When you think of sustainability and green building you probably envision solar panels, composting toilets and water catchment systems. Achieving sustainability is much deeper than that, and now includes the ability to find, track and use healthier building materials. Integrated Eco Strategy provides a two fold approach to achieving healthier materials by offering both Project Consulting Services and the worlds leading healthier materials management software, Red2Green.
